I’m very excited about my upcoming summer workshop on June 22 & 23, 2013. I’m offering it to folks who would like to explore the world of dance in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. As a counselor and minister, I’ve found dance to be a wonderful way to connect with my own soul and with others.

There are so many choices and ways to dance that it can be a bit daunting for someone to know where to start. So many styles, venues, partners to choose from. My home dance studio provides a private space in a small group setting where I can give one-on-one instruction. And having a private swimming pool and sun deck on the property is also a nice complement!

Please let me know if you are interested or if you know someone who would like to come. There will be 5 sessions. The first session, Saturday morning, will offer a personal exercise routine that tones each muscle group to provide over all flexibility and strength. Using this routine, we will explore how music and tempo can help us find the individual style which best suits us. A general understanding of Yoga, Tai Chi, Nia, Zumba and other exercise modalities will be covered as well as information about venues and classes.

The second Saturday session will be an introduction to social dance. We’ll learn how to find a dance partner, feel comfortable in a dance embrace (with the space between that is acceptable for you), and general principles of dance that apply to all partner dancing. Depending on those who come and where their interest lies, we will learn the basics of at least two social dances. So let me know if your vote is for swing, salsa, waltz, Texas 2-step, or whatever!

That evening, we’ll go out on the town together and put into practice what we have learned. There are wonderful dance floors waiting for us like the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, clubs with Swing Dance orchestras, western saloons, Salsa hot spots and more. We’ll go where those in the group collectively wish to go.

Sunday morning’s session will center on expressive dance. It will be a guided journey exploring improvisational dance, ecstatic dance and ways to freely move to music. Sunday afternoon will center on community dance – specifically the circle dances of Appalachia, Europe and the Middle East.

Folks can sign up by the session, by the day or for the whole weekend. And let me know if you’d like to be part of any of the meal times. We have some fun things planned: a picnic, a champagne breakfast, going out to eat together and a salad buffet.

You can see the attached flyer for prices and contact info. I really hope you can come!
